UNIT BLOCKS

TOOL-BASED WORKFLOWS

LEARN

The goal of our Step by Step Classroom Series, Challenges and Workflows is to give you structured learning environment to practice Adobe Illustrator. We have several Unit Blocks or Curriculum Paths established to Learn Adobe Illustrator in our Linear Workflow Model.

APPLY

Premium Plus is our Active Learning (step by steps) that follows along to our Linear Workflow Model. We have streamlined the learning process even more by separating out into Tool-Based Workflows. This is designed to get you learning and advancing through our Growth Models.

CREATE

The goal of the Unit Blocks is to give you 9-15 Hours within a Tool-Based Workflow. This is designed to Learn the Workflow Quickly and Advance through to Creating your Own Artwork. We do this by our Active Learning Retention Model and Repetition of Skills to build up your confidence and proficiency in the program.

PEN TOOL

Pen Tool is the pretty much the primary tool in Adobe Illustrator. Select Pen Tool if you are New or if you need more Control over your Anchors.

BLOB BRUSH

Blob Brush is our Efficiency Workflow for Line-Based Artwork. Select Brush if you have a Tablet and are looking to add on Pressure.

PENCIL TOOL

Pencil Tool is one of the easiest ways of learning Adobe Illustrator. Select Pencil Tool if you are New and have a Tablet.

DRAWING + PREP

As you feel more comfortable in a Workflow, I encourage you to follow along with our Drawing for Illustrator Lessons or start from your own drawing.

TYPE + TEXT

We are hitting up some text and effects this month with the Type and Text Effects. Most of our attention will be in the Appearance Panel and Layering multiple effects on top of each other to get professional results.

SHAPE-BASED

We are hitting up some Badge Logos to start putting all of the components together. We are going to be building out some templates you can use with your own artwork.

LEARNING TARGETS

LEARNING PHASE

The first Phase of the process is just to learn the program within the Linear Workflow Model. If you are still struggling and frustrated in Adobe Illustrator, I would recommend following along with the step by step along with the resources provided.

PRACTICE PHASE

The main goal is to transition into creating your own artwork as quickly as possible. The goal of this phase is to start replacing my resources with your own drawings or sketches. We do have Pre-Workflow and Drawing for Illustrator lessons to follow to start from your own drawing.

EFFICIENCY MODEL

We have 9-15 Hours within a Tool-Based Workflow. The focus is to go through the Growth Models to hit a level of proficiency to start adding on keyboard shortcuts and some speed into your workflow. This will come with time in the program. Don’t worry about keyboard shortcuts if you are still struggling with navigation.

CREATE YOUR OWN

Once you have completed all of the step by step lessons, I would move directly into creating your own artwork using the same Tool-Based Workflow. The next step in the process is to bring your own artwork through the Text and Shape-Based Design lessons to get completed pieces for your portfolio.

PREMIUM PLUS

CURRICULUM GUIDE

Daily Agenda

Each of the Individual Learning Module aims to be completed in around or under an hour, so you have plenty of time for the rest of the day to apply the concepts to your Own Artwork or continue with another Module. Currently there are 100 Modules in Premium.

Weekly Schedule

The 1st Week is to go through and Learn the Tool-Based Workflow by following along with the Step by Step Instruction. A good goal for the end of the 1st Week is to aim to use your Own Sketch or Drawing by the end of the Unit Block. Each of our Unit Blocks below range from 9-15 hours.

Pro Series

The 2nd Week is to stay in the same Tool-Based Workflow to Create your Own Artwork using the methods taught for your Portfolio or Professional Work. We also have Open Format Design Tutorials to your artwork through using your own Art, Text, Fonts and Colors.
PENCIL TOOL

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are continuing our Tablet Series by focusing in on the Pencil Tool this month. The Pencil Tool is my go to tool for the Tablet. It allows for speed, but also offers a lot more control than the Blob Brush.

APPLICATION

Depending on your Tablet there is a lot to figure out on your end. How zoomed in or out do you like? How fast can you draw before you lose control? Can you modify the settings to match what your hand is doing?

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Draw as fast as you can before you get out of control. Play into our Editing Phase with faster application of your lines. See how much overlapping you can tolerate.

BLOB BRUSH

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are all about our Tablet Tutorials. We are kicking off with the Blob Brush. One of our most popular tutorials on YouTube is the Hippo. So we want to add on and show you my actual workflow.

APPLICATION

When we start with the Blob Brush it is highly important to get the settings correct. Once that is done, all you have to focus on is adding your pressure with the Tablet.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: There are quite a few tutorials that will start from the Photo. I highly recommend starting from the photo and doing your own drawing to see a complete workflow.

PEN TOOL

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: A lot of our older content has actually covered a lot of the Pen Tool. We do have more Pen Tool in our Text and Badge Logo Units for our Pro Series.

APPLICATION

Our main focus using the Pen Tool is to following along to the same basic principles, but reach a more professional end point with logos and professional mascots.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: I would say we are ready for keyboard shortcuts, but there are so many hacks to this tool that make it a little more user friendly that we will still use our 2-Step Approach.

TEXT EFFECTS

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are hitting up some text and effects this month with the Type and Text Effects. Most of our attention will be in the Appearance Panel and Layering multiple effects on top of each other to get professional results.

APPLICATION

We are going to go back and forth from using the Type Tool with fonts to creating your own Text using the Pen Tool. Any of the Pen Tool Workflows can be replaced by using a font of your choice and create outlines.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Control your placement of Anchor Points when using the Pen Tool. Stay in the Appearance Panel to see how many Effects you can add on the the Text Logos.

BADGE LOGOS

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are going to be building out some templates you can use with your own artwork. These are Open-Format so I encourage you to use your own Text, Fonts and Colors.

APPLICATION

Some of you already know you want to be building in Shapes and Design. These can be Followed in the Learning Phase to Build out a Template or at the End when you are combining elements in the Pro Series.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: We are building out base logos and templates. Duplicate out layers to play around with different effects or combinations of strokes to get even more designs.

LINEAR WORKFLOW

CHALLENGE SERIES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: Our goal is to get you out of the Beginner Basics toward more Advanced Topics. If you have already gone through a few workflows or tutorials and are ready for the next step, I would try out a Challenge. I would try doing 4 Tutorials and then add on a Challenge for the 5th.

APPLICATION

These are all going to start in the same way so anyone can follow along. The main Challenge will be in the back end of the Workflow when we start to layer coloring and effects.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Re-Draw the Sketch and follow along to your own drawing rather than the one provided. Put the artwork in your own style to see if you can follow along from scratch.

ADVANCED COLORING

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We have a lot of our Tutorials that were used in my classroom to teach Advanced Coloring Techniques. They are included so you can self-direct the curriculum after you have your primary Workflow.

APPLICATION

These will all start from the Pen Tool, but I would use the Pencil Tool or Blob Brush along with our Tablet Friendly Guides to adapt the Tutorials to your own focus as you are going through the content.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Some of you have already gone through the Advanced Coloring in our Tutorials + Challenges. If you have not, I would choose the Workflow that you want more practice with such as the Pen, Blob Brush or Pencil.

PREMIUM PLUS

GETTING STARTED GUIDE

Download Resources

When you Login, you will see the Premium Resource Folder. Click on the Pink Zipped Folder to Download. Give it a second, there is a lot in there. It should take no longer than 15-30 seconds. Remember to Extract All and just Remember the Location of the Folder. You are ready to go.

Tool-Based Workflows

Pick a Tool-Based Workflow based on Available Materials (Tablet-Based) or a Workflow that is the closest to the style you will be using for your own artwork. Treat each Tool-Based Workflow as a Unit to Progress through the Learning Targets. Our Unit Blocks are Below with some Learning Targets and Growth Models.

Create Your Own

Each of our Unit Blocks has between 9-15 Hours of Content. Your Main Learning Target is to be Creating your Own Artwork by the end of the Unit. My recommendation is to start using the Practice Phase and Pre-Workflows to go from the same source materials you intend on using ie. Drawing, Sketch or Photo.

I appreciate your videos. I have been an illustrator user for years and have my own ways of doing things. It’s great to see other ways of using tools and learning tricks I didn’t know were available!
