GETTING STARTED GUIDE

Active Learning

Welcome to our Getting Started Guide for our Adobe Illustrator Active Learning Curriculum on Teachable. I have been posting New Full-Length Tutorials, Challenges and Workflows over the last year.

Workflows + Unit Blocks

STEP # 1: Pick a Focus or Unit Block to Start. We have 100 Full-length Learning Modules in our Active Learning Curriculum. I have organized them into 1-2 Week Unit Blocks (9-15 Hours) to make it easier to focus on your Learning Targets.

Follow Along (Teachable)

STEP #2: Follow Along Full-Length Adobe Illustrator Modules on Teachable. Start on the 1st Learning Module (easiest) and Follow Along to the Full-Length Step by Step Tutorials, Challenges or Workflows in the same Unit Block or Tool-Based Workflow.

Active Learning

I have been posting Full-Length Adobe Illustrator Tutorials, Challenges and Workflows over the last year to Teachable*. The idea in our Active Learning Curriculum was to give enough Follow Along Step by Steps for a Beginner to Learn, but leave enough in an Open-Format as you Advance through the Learning Targets to our Pro Series.
Image

Workflow Model

Tool-Based Workflows started from our Original Challenge Series with Full-Length Step by Steps for Beginners. The idea behind the Tool-Based Workflows is that there are Tools and Procedures that work really well together. This helps to cut down the Learning Curve of the Program since you are Learning How to Apply the Tools in the Correct Sequence.
Image

Follow Along

Active Learning is in our Step by Step format. This is for those of you who like to “Learn by Doing”. We have 100+ Step by Step Tutorials, Challenges and Tool-Based Workflows in our Curriculum. You can Follow Along to Individual Modules or use our Unit Blocks and Learning Targets to Plan out your Week.
ACTIVE LEARNING

CURRICULUM GUIDE

Learning Targets are designed so you know how to Approach each Block of Content. The idea behind the Learning Target and Unit Blocks is so you can Master a Workflow in 1-2 Weeks (if not sooner). As you put more time in to the Workflow your Goals and Expectations should Change as you Develop. The Goal is for you feel Confident and Comfortable Faster rather than Feeling Awkward and Frustrated Longer.
Image

LINEAR WORKFLOW

The Learning Phase of the process is just to learn the program within the Linear Workflow Model. If you are still struggling and frustrated in Adobe Illustrator, I would recommend following along with the Step by Step Instruction along with the Tutorial Resources Provided.

TOOL-BASED WORKFLOWS

Your goal while you Following Along to the Learning Modules is to Understand the Order and Sequence of Events so you can Apply it to Your Own Artwork. Each Tool-Based Workflow will cover a slightly different process with the intent that you can Build out your own Workflow.

CREATE YOUR OWN

Once you have completed all of the Full-Length Learning Modules in one Unit Block, I would move directly into Creating Your Own Artwork using the same Tool-Based Workflow. Each Major Unit Block (3) is pretty close to 30 Hours of Instruction in Adobe Illustrator.

UNIT BLOCKS

PEN TOOL WORKFLOWS

FOCUS: The nice part of the Pen Tool Workflow is it is it have a high level of control, but there are some little hacks if you know how to use the tools together. As you are going through the Workflows, compare and contrast to your own artwork so you can start to select the coloring and value methods that best match your own design style. VIEW PEN TOOL WORKLFOWS

TABLET-BASED WORKFLOWS

FOCUS: We are focusing on our Tablet Series with the Blob Brush and Pencil Tools. The Pencil Tool is my go to tool for the Tablet. It allows for speed, but also offers more control than the Blob Brush which we will use along with the Tablet Pressure Settings. VIEW TABLET BASED WORKFLOWS

PRO SERIES (TYPE + DESIGN)

FOCUS: We will be still building out in a Step by Step Format for those of you who are new to Building and using the Shape and Type Tools. Most of our attention will be in the Appearance Panel and Layering multiple effects on top of each other to get professional results. PENCIL TOOL

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are continuing our Tablet Series by focusing in on the Pencil Tool this month. The Pencil Tool is my go to tool for the Tablet. It allows for speed, but also offers a lot more control than the Blob Brush.

APPLICATION

Depending on your Tablet there is a lot to figure out on your end. How zoomed in or out do you like? How fast can you draw before you lose control? Can you modify the settings to match what your hand is doing?

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Draw as fast as you can before you get out of control. Play into our Editing Phase with faster application of your lines. See how much overlapping you can tolerate.

BLOB BRUSH

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are all about our Tablet Tutorials. We are kicking off with the Blob Brush. One of our most popular tutorials on YouTube is the Hippo. So we want to add on and show you my actual workflow.

APPLICATION

When we start with the Blob Brush it is highly important to get the settings correct. Once that is done, all you have to focus on is adding your pressure with the Tablet.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: There are quite a few tutorials that will start from the Photo. I highly recommend starting from the photo and doing your own drawing to see a complete workflow.

PEN TOOL

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: A lot of our older content has actually covered a lot of the Pen Tool. We do have more Pen Tool in our Text and Badge Logo Units for our Pro Series.

APPLICATION

Our main focus using the Pen Tool is to following along to the same basic principles, but reach a more professional end point with logos and professional mascots.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: I would say we are ready for keyboard shortcuts, but there are so many hacks to this tool that make it a little more user friendly that we will still use our 2-Step Approach.

ADVANCED COLORING

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We have a lot of our Tutorials that were used in my classroom to teach Advanced Coloring Techniques. They are included so you can self-direct the curriculum after you have your primary Workflow.

APPLICATION

These will all start from the Pen Tool, but I would use the Pencil Tool or Blob Brush along with our Tablet Friendly Guides to adapt the Tutorials to your own focus as you are going through the content.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Some of you have already gone through the Advanced Coloring in our Tutorials + Challenges. If you have not, I would choose the Workflow that you want more practice with such as the Pen, Blob Brush or Pencil.

TEXT EFFECTS

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are hitting up some text and effects this month with the Type and Text Effects. Most of our attention will be in the Appearance Panel and Layering multiple effects on top of each other to get professional results.

APPLICATION

We are going to go back and forth from using the Type Tool with fonts to creating your own Text using the Pen Tool. Any of the Pen Tool Workflows can be replaced by using a font of your choice and create outlines.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Control your placement of Anchor Points when using the Pen Tool. Stay in the Appearance Panel to see how many Effects you can add on the the Text Logos.

BADGE LOGOS

WORKFLOWS + CHALLENGES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: We are going to be building out some templates you can use with your own artwork. These are Open-Format so I encourage you to use your own Text, Fonts and Colors.

APPLICATION

Some of you already know you want to be building in Shapes and Design. These can be Followed in the Learning Phase to Build out a Template or at the End when you are combining elements in the Pro Series.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: We are building out base logos and templates. Duplicate out layers to play around with different effects or combinations of strokes to get even more designs.

LINEAR WORKFLOW

CHALLENGE SERIES

LEARN ILLUSTRATOR

FOCUS: Our goal is to get you out of the Beginner Basics toward more Advanced Topics. If you have already gone through a few workflows or tutorials and are ready for the next step, I would try out a Challenge. I would try doing 4 Tutorials and then add on a Challenge for the 5th.

APPLICATION

These are all going to start in the same way so anyone can follow along. The main Challenge will be in the back end of the Workflow when we start to layer coloring and effects.

ADVANCED

GROWTH MODEL: Re-Draw the Sketch and follow along to your own drawing rather than the one provided. Put the artwork in your own style to see if you can follow along from scratch.

GETTING STARTED GUIDE

Pick a Workflow

Pick a Tool-Based Workflow based on Available Materials (Tablet-Based) or a Workflow that is the closest to the style you will be using for your own artwork. Treat each Tool-Based Workflow as a Unit to Progress through the Learning Targets. Our Unit Blocks are Below with some Learning Targets and Growth Models.

Download Resources

When you Login, you will see the Premium Resource Folder. Click on the Pink Zipped Folder to Download. Give it a second, there is a lot in there. It should take no longer than 15-30 seconds. Remember to Extract All and just Remember the Location of the Folder. You are ready to go.

Workflows + Pro Series

Each of our Individual Unit Blocks has between 9-15 Hours of Content. Your Main Learning Target is to be Creating your Own Artwork by the end of the Unit. My recommendation is to start using the Practice Phase and Pre-Workflows to go from the same source materials you intend on using ie. Drawing, Sketch or Photo.
