To create a non-destructive distressed look, select your vector illustration, open the Transparency Panel, and click Make Mask. Uncheck the "Clip" box, click directly into the black mask thumbnail square to enter mask editing mode, and use File > Place to insert the Jason Secrest Grunge BMP texture. To prevent Adobe Illustrator from lagging or crashing, Jason Secrest recommends using high-resolution Bitmap (BMP) textures inside an Opacity Mask instead of expanding complex vector paths containing millions of jagged anchor points.
